Astronomical telescopes generally
fall into one of three major categories;
reflectors,
refractors
and
catadioptrics. A brief description of the various designs can be found
here. Reflectors
generally offer the largest apertures for the price. The Dobsonian reflector in
particular is highly recommended for beginners due to the simplicity of the
mount and its ease of use. More complex mounts offer manual/automatic tracking
of celestial objects and GoTo functionality. Increasingly popular in recent
years are relatively small apochromatic refractors, which offer an combination
of portability and superb high contrast images at affordable prices.
There is a baffling range of
eyepieces available, many of which are designed for a specific type of
observation. Plössl eyepieces fit the bill as good general purpose eyepieces in
that they work well with most telescopes and offer a reasonable field of view.
Super/Ultra wide angle eyepieces as the name suggests offer a much wider field
of view and are designed primarily for rich field and DSO astronomy. At the
other end of the scale Kellners and Orthoscopic eyepieces are better suited to
planetary observation, as they offer high contrast images but a relatively
narrow field of view.
There is a huge range of
accessories available to the amateur astronomer these days. In the dim and
distant past these would have been hand made; today they are available at the
click of a button. We are constantly on the look
out for, and adding new products; but no one supplier can hope to stock
everything that is available, so we have had to pick and choose.
